This is the first Saab we have owned. Just got it two weeks ago. Drove from Anchorage to Juneau with only one mishap, about halfway there after an over night stay in the middle of nowhere (temp around 0) the car refused to start. Not enough experience to play with it-or time, had to catch a ferry and still had 400miles to go! Had service station tow it and look at it. They declared (afetr an hour and a half) that the coil had gone south. They got it running and it ran beautifully for the next three weeks. Then two days ago after two days of single digit temperatures I went out to start it again and same thing no start and no spark from coil. Replaced coil and still no spark. Am waiting for arrival of proper Bosch coil, ignition control unit and distributer. In th meantime I've been trying to educate myself. The car has shown no ther signs of problems at all. When it runs it runs like a dream, so I am (for the moment) eliminating things like vacuum leaks, fuel problems etc. I tested the control unit (per my little Haynes book) for voltage with ignition on and appeared where it was supposed to according to the book (about 10.5v dc) I also checked voltage at the leads on the distributer-got voltage there but about a volt less than at the control unit-is this normal? The ignition is the 'Hall' type I believe. I'm guessing because it fits what I see with what is in the book.
One last thing when I turned the ignition key on the first time I was testing for voltage at the control unit there was a rather loud buzzer going off somewhere under the hood-I couldn't tell where it was coming from it went on for about 1 minute and then stopped-I was never able to identify where the noise was coming from. Can anyone tell me what that might have been. The only change that I noticed after running my little tests was that the engine would not turn over. It tried to crank but got as far as a single 'bump' sound and stopped-very much like a low battery but the engine say 15 previously was turning over fine-a little slow but fine. Have done something bad here in my ignorance and not be aware of it??
Appreciate any advice anyone could give.
Thanks Cahrlie
