Thanks for throwing some UV light on my quandry. I remembered that you can't really get a suntan through glass, so guessed it doesn't pass UV but attenuated UV makes sense. Now, if only PPG started retrofitting C900 reflective glass like the NG900's to cut that IR down.
I think the silicone on the dash controversy is beyond help. I spent a few hours one night surfing for an answer and got 20 different opinions. Some sources were saying it actually promotes the plasticizer bleeding out and so accelerates cracking. I really don't see it but who knows. Seems the UV screen they're supposed to come with now would retard polymer breakdown but
the carcare industry's so full of hype, I'm not ready to believe anything. Somebody suggested vaseline as a benign coating & that's what I've started using, along with a fabric cover and supergluing or epoxying cracks as soon as I notice them and a foil sunscreen while parked in the summer. I've been lucky so far.
I also started checking dashes at my mechanic's and noticed that some never crack and some crack to high heaven, all at the corners or high stress areas. I'm convinced that either Saab played with the formulations or the mold temps or didn't qc either/both properly. Anyway, I think you can usu. tell before nasty cracks form by the microcracks or stress lines at the corners of the tray and/or the speaker/vent openings.
I like to think that some mysteries were never meant to be solved.
