Not wanting to take off tie-rod end, I tried to glue a split in the gaiter with a tire patch. Did not stick for long. Anyway, the gaiter will not go over the tie rod end, so you have to remove the tie rod end.
But you can avoid an alignment if you carefully count the number of turns when you unscrew the tie rod end. Mark the threads as an extra precaution,because you are likely to turn the tie rod during the process.
