Strange oil burning

I have a 1987 900 S, when I start the car in the morning or after it's been sitting for an extended period of time, more than 8 hours, whitish smoke burns off the joint between the down pipe and the begining of the muffler system, it smells like oil, the question is whether it's coming from oil leaking from a piston or valve and then settles into the tail pipe or if it could be leaking from a gasket on to the pipe and then burning off from the hot exhaust gasses. The smoke does not come out of the back of the tail pipe but instead the smoke emminates from the muffler joint and usually finds it's way out underneath the hood in front of the car. After the car is warm, the smoke ceases because the oil has burned off. Any ideas as to a fix or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
