Check Engine light and Oxygen sensor

Hev been trying to track down why the Check Engine light uses to come on on my 1990 Turbo. The fault codes indicate a faulty oxygen sensor (12225) and "Oxygen sensor self-compensation circuit problem" (12112). I replaced the oxygen sensor but the light still comes on after some driving with the same failure codes. Thus I don't expect the actual sensor to be the problem. Can any other problem cause the computer to think of a faulty oxygen sensor? I was considering the removal of the EGR system to be responisble for the problem. I believe that on the 1990T the California EGR system was removed in a recall campaign, could this cause the probelems above? The car runs fine, even though the gas milage maybe could be better. However, does the fact that the light comes on actually deteriorate the performance of the car or should I just forget about the light? Any suggestions?
Thanks!
