Thanks for your reply. I've used some incorrect terminology however. Apparently there are metal vanes (for lack of a better term) in the torque converter that are the points that engage with the pump shaft. It is these vanes that shear off, not the splines of the pump shaft. I guess these vanes fatigue with time and finally just break off. I experienced no slipage in the tranny. I was just headed up a hill when "tink" and the motor raced and the car didn't. Others are suggesting that removing just the engine inorder to replace just the torque converter and pump will be difficult as the pump as multiple exit lines that run upto it from the valve body. Any additional comments? thanks.
