It's been my experience that not enough toe-in leads to instability. Under load, the front tires go \/ and whichever tire has the best grip wins.

OTOH, I've also found that tires make a big difference toward stability. I once put Dunlop D60A2 tires on my 87 900T and ran them for about three years. The first year seemed ok, then I started having all kinds of tail wagging problems, tried to sort it out with rebuilding rear suspension bushings, front end, tire pressures, you name it. Problem went away instantly with new Michelin MXV4 tires (which have their own problems, mainly lack of grip, don't ask, but at least they're stable!)
