As far as the idle goes, there is probably a leak somewhere causing it, or your AIC valve is going. I've never seen a 2.4 car with a bad AIC and a slightly high idle, though - usually it'll sit a lot higher than 1000rpm. I'd check for vacuum leaks, and if your car is an automatic, check that the a/c idle switch is working correctly.
On the gas thing, I'd honestly say it's a tough call. Modern cars with 10.1:1 compression ratios all recommend premium gas, and that seems right running that kind of compression ratio. Saab does have relatively conservative ignition timing, though, which allows the car to get away with a lower grade of fuel. If you've been running low octane gas, I'd continue on with it, but it's possible that a higher grade will improve performance and possibly fuel economy - I run premium in my '86 900S and gas mileage does improve and it seems a little peppier. I seriously doubt the extra mileage makes up for the extra fuel cost, but the less often I go to the gas station the better... :) 87 octane nets me around 250-280 miles per tank, and I can usually hit 350 or more running 92 - that's mixed city/highway driving, and a LOT of short trips.
