All I know is what I see on TV...and Apples got crucified for fraud in UK according to The Learning Channel here in the States! Dunno what's being done, obviously Corporate denies any knowledge, heads will roll, etc.
Good thing you're inspecting it, doing it yourself. Brake fluid should be flushed annually or at least every 24 months per Saab instructions as I recall. The rear caliper/pistons need to be oriented properly to mesh with the steel shim (there are punches in the shim that I use to align the piston rather than the special Saab tool).
I would replace the calipers if the bleeders are broken or corroded...it's possible you could use a small drill and a screw extractor to remove the remainder of the bleeders, but it could be a real issue and you'd probably want to rebuild the calipers anyway, replace the piston seals and the dust boot. A set of rebuilt calipers sounds like the way to go!
I wonder what you mean by the braking system not being up to par.
Does the brake pedal go to the floor, or do the brakes not seem to stop the car as well as they once did? Or do the brakes lose effectiveness after one or two moderate to hard stops. Any of these symptoms could be related to other than simple brake fluid degradation, which usually doesn't cause this (the brake fluid degradation causes other problems which changing the fluid can't or doesn't usually fix!).
