News Flash !! From the Seattle Times, January 12, 2001. Headline: Saab will stay ‘a little bit different’. Dateline: Dallas (The center of Scandinavian Auto culture), Texas. And you know these people are serious journalists when the article to the left starts out: “Stop at once when oil light comes on.”
So the article on Saab notes that “Saabers wonder if one of the auto industry’s great eccentrics is about to be fitted with pinstripes and shoved into the mainstream?” Knowing that General Motors acquired 100% of the company might excuse you from asking this question, might it not? In response to this concern, Daniel B. Chasins, president of Saab Cars USA says “Of course not. I think our appeal today is broader, and we want that. But we are still different.” Any chance Dan is telling us what he thinks we want to hear but not necessarily what is accurate? Before you answer, read further.
The article goes on to say that currently Saab has only two basic models, but by 2005 plans to increase its major models to four, including a sport-utility vehicle of some sort. Now there is an original thought and a different way of thinking. Add a SUV to your model offering. That’s an idea whose time has come ........ and gone.......(long gone). In 2005 gasoline will be three dollars a gallon and SUV’s will be as “in” as mini-vans. Apparently this is what we have to look forward to from one of the industry’s great eccentrics. Maybe they will put the SUV's ignition switch on the floor.
Right now I own two OG 900’s. If Dan is in charge, only way out of this I can see is to hire an actuary to calculate how many 900's I need for a lifetime supply and hit the market.
