I did just that, in 1989. Got a U-Haul, and filled it with junk the movers wouldn't take (cleaning chemicals and food) or that I didn't trust them with (my stereo equipment and mountain bikes) or that we wanted on arrival (vacuum cleaner, etc.). Dragged the U-Haul 3,000 miles from Southern Maryland to central California (Monterey), over the Rockies. No problem! My hitch kit said it was good for 1,000 pounds. The Saab probably could have handled a lot more.
The big trick with a trailer is balancing the load inside the trailer to put the proper weight on the trailer tongue -- I used a bathroom scale and got it very close to 100 pounds, which was ideal. If the load in the trailer is too far forward, the tongue will be too heavy and push the rear of the car down, lifting your front end, which will give you serious handling problems -- low traction, reduced braking effectiveness. If the load is too far aft in the trailer, then the tongue will be light, and the trailer will yaw back and forth and try to jerk your car off the road as you drive, like a dog shaking a rag.
Make sure the U-Haul you get has brakes, functioning lights, properly inflated tires, and that you can roll it around easily by hand (might have to have a friend stand on the back of it to teeter it level so you can roll it.) The smallest 2 sizes of U-Haul trailers are fine for the Saab.
Drive carefully, allowing plenty of interval between you and everyone in front of you, and make gentle stops and smooth accels. You can do it.
