A few things -
First, a 94 convertable is the same as a 93 and earlier 900. The convertable used the Old Generation body and engine for one more year than the sedan.
Second, the manual transmission uses 10-30 motor oil. The automatic uses automatic transmission fluid. You don't state, but I'm assuming you've got a manual tranny - 10-30 in an automatic will kill it in short order.
Gear oil smells different, and is usually thicker. However, you've got the right stuff in the transmission now. If you're really worried, run it for 500 miles, and change it again. If the previous owner had put in gear oil, there's not much you can do, other than to run the right stuff in the tranny now.
Did you get any service records with the car? Do they shed any light on when the tranny was serviced (if ever?)
