hard enough to compress the rear of the car nearly to the rear window, less down low- from a standstill with the other car going probably 35-40. My seat held up fine. It may have yielded a bit but i didn't notice it. Nothing like the Detroit and Japanese junk you see the stories about on 20/20 etc. In fact, thinking about it, the seat is still in my parts inventory in the basement because the upholstery was beautiful. I never noticed any damage- the wet roads surely lowered the peak impact. I was moving at her speed within 50 ft or so and continued on her nose for some distance before she got rear ended by a third car.
