My 1980 900T needs a new "Harmonic Balancer" (crank pulley) and the oil pump seal is part of the job plus the power steering pump went out after leaking for a while. Mechanics want $1000-$1200 to fix. Dealer $2000! I've priced the pulley, gasket and seal for about $150, and the pump $350 new or $80 to have old one rebuilt. If I do it myself I could save $700. But the pulley job isn't easy, and the time problem... when to do it? Plus the car may only be worth what the job would cost. So, it sits waiting. But, it starts right up every other Saturday when I run it to keep the block lubed. I'm tempted to sell it as is (it's too nice to part out) to someone who will appreciate this classic (first year of 5 speed, plus turbo, 5 door 185k miles and no rust - California car), but that damn sentimental thing keeps me back.
I have a '99 9-3 as my daily driver and like it very much - no problems. But if your thinking of getting a 9-3, I suggest you wait until the next generation 9-3 comes out in a year. It's suppose to be another big leap forward for Saab and will reduce the value of the current 9-3 condiderably. I leased mine, so in two more years when the lease is up I can decide if the new 9-3 is worth trading up for or if not I can by my '99 9-3 for a decent price. Most of the guys on the 9-3 BB are itching for the new 9-3 and seem discontented with the current 9-3, although I don't share that thought.
Why are you going to the dealer instead of an independent Saab Mechanic? My mechanic charges 40-60% less and was trained in Sweden. Dealers are for new cars with warranties not ten year + cars.
