You could relocate the axle forward 4/10" Posted by Jon [Email] (#11) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Jon) on Sun, 21 Jan 2001 19:03:18 In Reply to: rubbing tires on an SPG, need some opinions..., mike, Sat, 20 Jan 2001 03:33:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi Mike,
I put 195/65-15 Nokia Hak Q tires on my 89 SPG, and they rubbed. I relocated my rear axle forward 0.4". Removed rear links from axle to body, increased their length by 0.4", removed rear suspension front pivot and milled the bolts holes 0.25" longer. I then re-installed the pivots reversed (front to back/back to front). The combination of the offset and the milling of the bolt holes gives a 0.4" farther forward mounting position.
This allows for larger tires by centering the wheel/tire in the wheel opening. If you look, you will see that the tires are closer to the rear of the wheel opening than the front of the wheel opening.
I milled a spare pair of pivots before putting the car on the lift. I ended up replacing the suspension lower links with another set, because I could not remove the bolts from the pivots. The bolts rust to the pivot rubber bushing metal sleeve. I had no luck trying to drive them out.
