I suspect your idle hunt is from a vac line knocked off when you did the alt. there is one that goes from the side of the intake, past alt, under hood/windshield edge and to the vac resovior. I just jiggled mine loose when I replace the heater hoses and it did just what you describe. this will wreck your boost too.
Your black wire may be the vac hose. its a small one. Did you reconnect the alt ground? its a black wire too.
How tight are the belts? They should deflect 1/2" on the long span. Did you use new bushings and is the alt aligned properly with the water pump? Mine was cocked due to old bushings leaving one belt with less tension than the other. Put a tool to the alt and your ear to rule out bearings, but they will complain if the belts are too tight. My alt belts alway sing a little. Adjust the tension if too loose or too tight - I fiddle with mine both ways until they sound best (cuz i hate the pulleys and the sounds they make).
I put on a new idler pulley today and ahhhh, the silence (just had to tell someone - my wife just doesn't care).
good luck
