There are two vacuum lines which run from the engine compartment through the firewall and into the underdash area. The firewall has a little "port" where the hoses fit onto a pair of nipples on both the passenger side and on the engine bay side.
This "port" is the likely culprit. You can find it by following the vacuum hoses from the solenoid attached to the big flap on the ventilation fresh air intake box. There will also be one coming from the vacuum reservoir (approx. 1-liter sized plastic canister just in front of passenger door hinges) These vacuum lines should lead to a fitting on the firewall just beneath the vent intake box. Don't unplug these hoses- they're awfully tricky to re-attach. Just figure out where they are, and then peel back the passenger footwell carpeting and try to find the nipples on the passenger compartment side of the firewall. I'll bet there are a couple of rubber vacuum hoses hanging out nearby. If both hoses are unplugged, you've got a 50% chance of connecting them the right way. Turn the car on and test the vents. If they don't work correctly, reverse the connection.
Good luck!
