You could put 205/55R15's on BUT it gains you NOTHING on stock rims. The
widest tire you SHOULD put on stock 15x5.5" rims is the 195/60R15. And if
you were to bother going w/a wider rim to accomodate wider tires - you
should plus size to a 205/50R16 which would make a nice improvement in handling & appearance,...if you've got an extra grand lying around.
The 205/55R15 looses any handling advantage the extra width might offer
by ballooning out from the narrow 5.5" stock rim & squirming around. In
addition,... the availibility of 205/55R15 tires is very bad - it's not a
popular size. Conversely, the 195/60R15 is one of the most popular sizes on the market! You can pick pretty much any speed rating you want - but
the 195/60VR15 seems to offer the best ratio of handling/traction/comfort.
I reccomend the Toyo Proxes (inexpensive, good quality), Pirelli P-6000
Veloche (great tire, bad in snow), Michellin MXV4+ (NICE, $$$) and there
are countless others,... especially in the more versitle "H" speed rating.
Get a Tire Rack Ad & take it to a local tire dealer - be prepared for a
sour look, but if you're polite you'll get a price about $15 per tire over
whats listed in the TR Ad, which is likely to be $40 per tire less than
what the local guy sells em' for! Don't feel bad either, he's still making money & by making the sale he gets the business his competion would have
gotten, which gets him that juicy year end bonus so he can buy his wife a
nice Maytag washer/dryer. Can you guess what my last job was? HA HA!
