Anyway, I would stay away from the adapter usage. Those can tend to buzz and redirect the sound in strange ways. I mounted two Polk EX-693 6x9s (three way, high power handling) in my parcel shelf/package tray, and they sound fantastic.
Sound problems: These can arise for a number of reasons. You ALWAYS get what you pay for in car stereo. I have had good experience with polk, blaupunkt, and Rockford Fosgate speakers for the dash. The problems some may experience with dash speakers come from what is driving them. Some aftermarket heads have low power output, which leads to heavy distortion when turned up (called THD, or totsl harmonic distortion) Check out the ratings in your owner's manual.
