Me vs. Corporate Muffler Company Posted by JeffD [Email] (#1885) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JeffD) on Fri, 16 Feb 2001 14:43:12 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As the muffler on my '87 900 5spd 8v blew the other day, I decided to get it fixed quick at the local Car-X place. They took me underneath the car and showed me that yep, the pipe going into the muffler had rusted out, and the muffler needed replaced. No problem, I said. Then they started in on the other pieces, how I needed a new tailpipe, etc. I knew something was up, so I said I wanted to see a quote before they did any work. Good thing I did.
Labor was $10. No big deal there. However, the pipes, clamps, etc. were added, which I didn't think I needed. And now the best part, the muffler itself was $169. Total cost: over $340.00. I said thanks but no thanks and went on my merry (but loud) way.
I looked into my copy of Nines, and found Meyer Garage, Inc. located in McIntire, Iowa. I live near Des Moines, and gave them a call. With my Saab Club of America 10% discount, the muffler would cost (drumroll please) $57.60. Add the hangers on, and $7.50 for shipping, and it'll be here in less than a week.
Guess which option I did? True, a little muffler work won't be the most fun in the world, but I figure what the heck.
