Bad Reverse Gear, Any Thoughts?

With temperatures approaching the 50s and memories of how much I enjoy driving my 87 900 convertible, thoughts of taking it out of hibernation and putting it back on the road fill my mind. I bought the machine last year knowing reverse was shot and limped thru my first summer of Saab ownership going forward only. Fixing this minor (sure) problem was first on my list this spring. I found and purchased a 1986 900 with a good 5 speed, however, while sitting in my driveway over the winter waiting to be cannibalized my 17 year old son became quite attached to it. He thinks I bought it for him. Now I’m trying to decide how much I love him.
Anyway, I have already opened the side of the transmission and flipped the reverse fork to help engage the reverse gear further with little to no success. I could see that the teeth on the leading edge of the gear were chipped and broken.
My question. I think I know the answer but it is worth a try. Is there any way to change that gear without removing the transmission from the car? If not, am I better off pulling the engine/tranny and then replacing just the reverse gear (cutch and other obvious parts would also be replaced) or should I just swap it with a working transmission? Everything in the existing 5 speed works great except reverse.
I'm sure my son will understand, with time.
Thanks for any advice.
