i've been trying to track down a sound that i swear is a vacuum leak (i know - we're all a little tired of the vac leak posts...) the sound eminates from directly behind the steering wheel/knee bolster area and is directly related to engine speed (not noticable at idle - louder with higher rpms). i put my hand on the gas pedal and listened down low for the shhhhh and for comparison, opened the car door and put my foot on the gas. i still think it comes from the cabin side of the firewall. i was thinking alt bearings because when i put a screwdriver to it the bearings hiss. this is not really loud to the ear though.
ok. so, what do ya think? the car is a base model so its not CC or turbo. climate control does not affect the sound so its not the ducting. the firewall wire grommet is off, but sound exists at stationary higher rpms. am i missing anything - i'm not familiar with the interior vac lines.

don't say remove the knee bolster - i have a rule that i don't take the car apart unless its above 20F outside and that will be a while.
