The main differences between motor oil and gear lube are:
motor oil - generally "lighter" and contains detergents to suspend small particles and combustion by-products, and other ingredients to extend its life in an engine.
gear lube - generally "heavier" and may contain Extreme Pressure (EP on the label) additives primarily for service in hypoid-type differentials.
Saab does not use a hypoid differential in the 5-speed final drive. Saab says the EP-type lubricants defeat the synchronizers (that has been my experience with Amsoil 70W-90 gear oil, type GL-5 EP). Saab recommends CD or better grade 10W-30 (detergent-type) motor oil. All oils these days are SF or similar, and exceed the service specs of the CD grade available at the time the 900 classics were manufactured.
Lots of people use Mobil 1 (synthetic). That's what I use now. The shifting is much better than gear oil but there is a slight gear whine at highway speeds. Amsoil engine oil is the best, having performed better than any other oil in laboratory wear tests. I may go to that soon. Look up Amsoil on the net and find your closest dealer. The company markets through individuals, much like Tupperware.
Don't know anything about the Honda or other lubes Kevin mentioned.
