Assuming you trust the mechanic that told you this (because there is a chance you have bad piston rings), you could go ahead and remove the head yourself. If you take it to an engine shop and have them rebuild the head for you, you are probably looking at around $350. So you save yourself a lot of money doing the labor yourself. If you don't want to remove the head yourself, the other alternative is to just leave it until you have cash to pay someone to do it. Probably won't really damage anything else (except o2 sensor and catalytic converter), you just have to keep an eye on the oil.
