My cars thus far in life:
1) 1988 Volvo 240 (sold 145K miles)
2) 1990 Volvo 740 (given away at 200K)
3) 1993 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible (current, 97K)
I like my Saab a lot. But I have worked hard to keep it in good running condition. I, like yourself, always like the lines of the classic 900's especially with the facelift in '87. If you really like them and want to be committed to taking care of it, then buy one.
The Saab is the first car I have worked on myself and I have done everything for the last 60K since I bought it.
Parts will be more expensive and you will most likely buy more of them. The only place to get genuine Saab parts is from the dealer for the most part. Most warehouses selling OEM parts aren't much cheaper so I stopped messing around with them.
I have replaced parts on my Saab much earlier than a Volvo: slave cylinder, ball joints, brake rotors, catback exhaust, head gasket.
The bad things about Saab are:
head gaskets and trannys
Some say that head gaskets don't fail on 2.0 litre engines but they do. Mine failed and I have seen many other posting about failures on this BB.
As far as trannys go, most people do not like the 3-spd AT's. Most say they need to be rebuilt every 100K. Most like the 5-spd manuals (except for second gear which has a synchro that wears rapidly) but they too have a high rate of failure - just scroll down through the postings. My tranny is good except for second gear. I take good care - good lube and no burn outs. I hope it never fails - at least not until I've gotten more than 200K out of it. But the chance that it will is definitely there. Although there are those that drive their 5-spds to the bone yard with the original tranny functioning fine (OK maybe that doesn't happen much but only because a Saab owner would save the good tranny for their next car - just in case).
Good luck.
