Oil burning with fuel combustion lends bluish smoke - black is almost pure oil burning (remember Kuwait). There may also be soot in the tailpipe.
Its impossible to get "fuel" in the coolant - I think the prior post was referring to "gas" as combustion gas - ie exhaust. This will bubble and cause lotsa pressure in the reservoir.
CV's die when the grease 1)leaks out by way of cracked boot 2) grease cooked from head pipe heat (more applicable to rt. inner driver) 3)cracked boot allows road crud in. People typically don't realize a boot cracked, threw the grease and became liquid sandpaper until the joint signals its impending failure ala the click.
Coolant should be flushed every two years. Its almost assured this is not the case in most cars. People don't maintain stuff until it leaks or breaks.
