With the car running, put a voltmeter across the battery terminals. Voltage should be around 13-14V at idle, rising slightly (by maybe 0.5V) when revved to 3000.
If the voltage is much under 13V, your alternator probably needs attention.
To test the battery, give it a full charge overnight then load test it, either using a battery tester or by putting it back in the car, turning the main lights on, and cranking the engine. The lights should dim slightly, but not that much. If they dim lots, or go out completely, it's a dead battery.
