Coolant replacement

Hi,
My coolant is looking quite brown-ish. Rust I think, does not look like oil because there is no shiny film flooting).
The car stood still for almost 2 years. So I am going to replace it.
But I am thinking of cleaning the system before filling it up with new coolant.
Could this be done by connecting up your garden hose and then flush the system?
Can one use regular water for flushing it clean? (or should I add something?)
What procedure is best? Counterflow?
Also, do I want to clean the heater by disconnecting the two hoses and flushing it with water, to remove all the gunk.
Which one of the hoses is the inlet and which one is the outlet?
Any tips/suggestions helpful.
Cheers,
Emil
