If you're getting sporadic response from the switch, you can try this before replacing it.
Although it takes some time and patience, I've actually pried apart the switch unit itself, to expose the little strip of metal that is the "contact point" for the switch. You'll want a small flathead screwdriver to pry the walls away from the little tabs that hold it together.
Took a little bit of sand paper on the end of a pencil or something, and scraped away the oxidation that had built up, and viola!
