Certainly you get wear in the caliper and yolk with age, but I have never failed to stop the clunking by simply installing new brake pad retaining pins. But before you install them what you want to do is put the pin in a vice and bend both legs of the "U" shape toward the front of the car so that the two ends of the "U" are pointing at an angle and the "U" looks more like this: \-\ for the left side and this: /-/ for the right side.

The clunking you hear is the pads moving around in the caliper, and by bending the "U" pin like this you keep a constant pressure on the pads in the forward direction and the clunk is gone! Trust me, it works, I have never had to replace my caliper, weld the yold, etc., etc. Make sure you lube everything up with synthetic brake grease on assembly.
