One of our cars (91 900 NA) also died a couple of times on my wife and took a while to re-start. It finally died on me and I could not re-start it. I did some checking. Connecting the 27 and 30 fuse connections, the pump was not running but I had voltage at the pump. So very easy fix, I thought. Got a new fuel pump and replaced it in 40 min in the parking lot of a shopping area (had done the operation on my 89 before). After replacement, the car still didn't start. So, after more checking, I noticed that the positive connection from the fuse box to the pump did have a very high resistance. So, I hooked up the fuel pump to the battery directly with a long wire and the car ran fine. At home, I finally figured out that it was a bad connection in the bulkhead connector. The pump draws a lot of current and over the years the connection burned on the surface and did not give enough current for the pump to run. Took me a while to figure this one out and a real nightmare to get to the connector (91 has mid-console). Hope this helps.
