If the transmission oil cooler thermostat is anything like the 9000 one, the problem is a simple O-ring at the back. The thermostat is a cylinder, and the back end is held on with a circlip (round spring metal with two little tangs). That plate has an O-ring, and when it gets tired, it leaks like a sieve.
You could disassemble the thermostat and bring the O-ring to an automotive shop, where they could match it. I'm pretty sure Saab doesn't sell the O-ring - they would just replace the thermostat (at an amazing cost).
In the 9000, the solution was to bypass the thermostat. In fact, there was a technical bulletin and a kit to do just that - turns out the thermostat caused more problems (leaks, noise) than it helped, and it was eliminated in later years. The kit replace the four hoses (two from tranny to thermostat, two from thermostat to oil cooler) with two hoses - tranny to oil cooler.
Now, I don't know if such a kit is available from Saab. You could call the parts department of your nearest dealer and ask. Another option would be to find a transmission shop, and see if they can make up a set of hoses.
