Don't know where you're from there Rob, but out here (Los Angeles) we have quite a few of the large "car parts recycling" scrap yards where you pay your peanuts entrance fee, trod in there with your tools and hard soled shoes and go at it. Every week they have "new" cars to pick through. Some wrecked, most just poorly maintained. I saw one early 80's 900 with no more than 30K on the odometer! I believe the number too as the car looked near perfect - brake rotors hardly worn, interior perfect, little oil and dirt around the motor. The only thing I could estimate as to why it was in there was poor running condition because of the dried up vacuum seals. The tires were also cracked. My guess is that it sat out under a desert car port for over a decade just baking away and the "elderly" owner didn't care to spend the money to have it fixed to sell.
