I failed last time here in the People's Republic of California. It failed the NOx. I had the catalytic converter replaced and it passed BARELY. I had a local gas station/garage weld on whatever generic cat that they had. Don't even THINK about getting the real Saab one. I hear it's like a $1000! It's much cheaper to get a generic welded on.
You COULD upgrade to one of those "high flow" cats, but I don't know much about that.
I later found that my AMM was faulty (though when testing it, it checked out okay. After REPLACING it I found many annoying problems I was having, e.g. cold starts and smoke out of the tailpipe when cold, went away) I think that it may have been screwing up the air to fuel mixture and somehow affecting the emissions. Perhaps I wouldn't have needed the cat after all had I just known to have the AMM replaced...
Good luck!
