Head gasket : Is replacement neccesary?

I have a 92 900 non turbo with 91k miles and am faced with a transmission replacement. Heres the dilema: The engine runs great and no apparent leaks, but the engine is coming out and the accessibility is undeniable but the extra cost and the old adage if it aint broke......Is there any way to determine the condition of a head gasket or do you just wait till she blows?
Any particular pattern to failing gaskets based on mileage or other factors or is this basically a poor design and failure is only a matter of time? Any ideas?? Thanks JK
