hello people!
I have a 1985 900s and intermittantly i will have a problem with the engine losing power. sometimes it happens as soon as i start the car, when the engine will idle at ~300 rpm. when i turn the accelerator i will hear a faint 'hoot' and the engine will cut out and almost die. when i let go, idle goes back to 300. eventually if i let it sit long enough, it will go back to normal idle speed and then drive fine for while, but then i will experience loss of power while driving. letting up on the gas doesn't seem to help, nor does flooring the pedal. i can be in 4th gear and maintain 50mph, but i have VERY little acceleration. while the engine is doing this, it is not a smooth loss of power. the engine will just start to stutter and sometimes backfire (only seems to backfire if i floor the pedal). the problem eventually clears up (either after a few minutes or after i stop driving and start after a few hours) and i regain power.
other times, the car will start and ride fine, and the problem will start out of nowhere at any given time.
at first i though it only happened when it was cold and damp outside, but that was because here in minneapolis it has been cold and rainy for the past month. now that it's dry outside, i still have the same problem.

i have checked the distributor, and replaced the cap/wires/plugs.
i have also had the car into a garage and they have replaced the o2 sensor as well as the fuel pump. (i think they secretly know what's wrong but are intent on milking my cash away from me)

if anyone has any ideas as to what this could be, i would appreciate them! otherwise this poor saab may spend the rest of its life as a gigantic lawn ornament next to my old volvo.
thanks.
-justin.
