I first got into Saabs as a student. Reasons: I'd always loved the og 900 shape, and they provided me with a very cheap route to owning a car with reasonable performance which can also lug most of my belongings about.
In those days, owning a car for me was only an option if I did all the work myself. 900s are extremely easy to work on, compared to many cars. And, they really don't go wrong very often, not compared to othe European cars or even Japanese cars of the same vintage.
Parts aren't the cheapest, but they're not that expensive. Used parts are relative cheap, and readily available.
Now that I'm past my student days, I still love 900s, and currently have a 90016vT and a 9kT, and am looking for a 99T to complete the collection. Both my Saabs seem to require minimal maintenance, with the odd steering rack or brake calipers every now and then.
I also have a 1987 bmw 325i pimpmobile, which causes me great shame to be seen in, but is beautifully engineered, with only 89k, and full service records. Is this a better car? In some ways yes, in many ways no. It's really well engineerd, but it's not that nice on a long trip, is really tail-happy in the wet, and has very little load space. Also, I feel a much nicer person when driving the Saabs.
