It sounds very much like your link rod, which is the rod connecting the knob to the heater valve (steel rod, 1' long, with plastic UJs on each end) is no longer connected. In addition, your heat knob is broken.
Remove the left hand speaker grill and have a look for the rod, you'll probably see it, but it won't be connected to the knob.
