Before you get to deep into this animal, start by looking around for a REAL good Saab mechanic. A good way to check is to ask them what they normally do when they service a 1989 900 Saab transmission. If the answer is change the fluid and put a new filter in ........ keep looking.

Another thing to look for as you drive by his shop is that the majority of his cars are Saabs ............. if its a little of this and a little of that ............. keep looking.

On my 89 900 turbo I was having problems with the tranny, I took it to two very good european mechanics all they wanted to do was change fluid and filter.......... I kept looking til I found a real Saab mechanic, how did I know he was a Saab mechanic..... there were 22 cars in front of his shop and all were Saabs.

I told him my car was lacking take off power and I needed help. He looked at everything and said my transmission needed internal adjustments, fluid and filter change and he guaranteed it would fix the problem. I mentioned to him I had personally already did the filter and fluid thing,........ his reply was...... I guarantee this will fix the problem.'

Well he fixed the problem at a cost of $90 dollars and it drives great now.

If you can find this type of mechanic who loves the cars and is not in the RIP off mode your in good shape because these cars do have their own personalities.

I do agree with the other guys in that you need to get to this before it gets to bad. Changing the tranny in these machines are a real bugger because the tranny sits in the bottom of the engine.

Regarding the other idle problem check your idle control sensor it sounds like its going bad.

If you had a bad air mass meter you would have smoke coming out your tail pipe and all kinds of other things happening with the idle and operation of the car.

Good luck
