After your last post, I'm not sure I'd risk it.
Realistically, I think if you were successful with the alternator bushings, you are capable of the thermostat and flush. They are much more visible (at least on my 86 :) and accessible.
I HATE flushing the coolant, cause I always make a mess, but it's not that difficult to do. I usually get a hose that will fit the lower drain, and drain it into a bucket under the car. After the coolant is out, you don't have to worry about coolant at the thermostat, which makes it a pretty simple job.
