To SPG or not to SPG? (Long)

I posted yesterday about an SPG that I was looking at, it's in the TSN classifieds (Beaverton, OR). Anyways, even though there is this 3rd gear synch problem and it's leaking oil, I find myself drawn to this car, because the body is in pretty good shape. However, it's high mileage kinda scares me (over 200K).
A couple questions:
1) Considering these problems, is the car worth $2,500?
2) Should I drop some cash and have a mechanic check it out before I go further?
3) If I do get the car and spend the money to fix the tranny and oil leak, would it be worth it to go ahead and install performance upgrades?
Essentially, my situation is this. I'm a more or less poor college kid, who is unfortunatly (yet also fortunatly) a saab nut. I've already wasted thousands on a '75 99 that refuses to work longer than a week before it breaks down again. I'd love to have a nice fast SPG, but I can't afford one with low mileage with all sorts of goodies already installed. Instead I can only afford one that's seen better days, and hope to fix it up in the future. The question remains....To SPG or not to SPG?
Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated....
Adrian
