I stopped at Danneman's Auto Service in Laurel, MD today and had a chat with a former service tech who now mans the counter. I wanted to get a price on bearing replacement for my spindle assys. since I plan to put '87 vented brakes on my '85. To make a very long story shorter, he told me the bearings used are the same for both -->87 and 88--> spindles and that an '87 rotor and hub can be mounted on an '88 spindle allowing for the better calipers while retaining the pre-88 bolt pattern. Assuming he's correct, me concern becomes the offset of the wheels. I understand the different bolt pattern wheels also have different offsets. I think I've read here that '88--> cars have shorter axles. Is that correct? If so, does the deeper 87 rotor make up for the difference in axle length so that my '87 bolt pattern wheels won't rub or stick out from under the fender when mounted on an 88 spindle as he suggests? I have custom wheels on the car and would like to keep them on the car but I would love to havethe 88 style brakes.
