leaving the ignition on?

Last week some idiot that test drove the '90 900 we are trying to sell forced the key out of the ignition while in the "ON" position. It sat like that for about a week, and when tried to drive it, the battery was dead. I drove it for a while and several days later, the battery was still dead. Is the battery now toast, or would leaving it in "ON" cause other problems? Any ideas on recovering the cost from these idiotic people who wouldn't buy my car because "the insurance was so high"?
