Car: 85 900S

Punchline/Problem (history in paragraphs that follow):
Started the install the upper ball joint. The problem is, the wheel hub will not rotate such that the wheel hub lines up with where the upper ball joint should slide into the upper control arm. Is it possible that the half shaft is too long? Since it's in the car, it's tough to compare it's length to the old one now. Did they change the half shaft during the life of the classic 900? Am I missing something?

History:
So, I got the inner driver all cleaned up and greased up (with latex gloves on). Slid the half-shaft into place. Tightened the clamp on the boot. All felt well. With the car in neutral, turning the half shaft felt right. With it in reverse, it resisted. Again, it felt right.

Installed a new lower ball joint. Slid the wheel hub onto the outer end of the half-shaft. Dropped the wheel hub onto the lower ball joint. Hand tightened the nut on the ball joint.

Then went on to the upper ball joint. See description in 1st paragraph.

Anyway It all feels very right but it just seems to be too long! I thought about trying to tap it in with a rubber mallet but was wary of that since it seems to be all the way in and I didn't want to risk any damage to the inner driver or transmission. The boot on the inner driver also seems to look like it's lined up identically to the passengers side boot. On the outside, the boot lines up with the edge of the wheel hub perfectly. It all looks RIGHT! It's driving me crazy. Sooooo close now. I'd hoped to drive it around the block tonight!

Thanks to RS and Ted for their help with the grease question from last night.
