A Benz's wiper is much different though. Not only do they have one wiper, but it actually has an additional mechanism to extend and retract the single wiper - the wiper arm lengthens through the upper corners of the windshield and detracts when it approaches the top-middle of the windshield to avoid going over the top of the car. This enables the car to run a much wider inch wiper blade to cover the majority of the glass area without being too large for it.
If I could buy and aftermarket product that did the same, I would. However, the idea to rig an old Scirocco assembly to do the same doesn't seem very "practical" to me.
At one point, I raced an old Audi 5000 turbo quattro (with a hot CPU and wastegate spring for 217HP) at Brainerd International Raceway. This car even had that tacky little "spoiler" on the driver's wiper to force it down harder on the windshield. Regardless, after running down the straightway at about 125MPH, the spoiler did the opposite and made it lift!
Sorry, I'm too practical about such things as looks, but the rainy day at BIR made me a believer in not only "function," but also Rainex!
Oh, speaking of function, there were also three 5.0 Mustangs (one was a supercharged '93 Cobra) that all wiped out on the straightaway during a drizzle. It seems all that burnt rubber from the dragsters is not good traction for RWD vehicles with 75/25 weight distribution.
If anybody is interested in more usable traction, please see my post about Quaife differentials!
