You can replace the upper shock bushings with poly if you want. Poly bushings are much "tougher" then rubber bushings. You may or maynot notice "more vibratrion through the car" with the poly bushings. Rubber is soft and tends to dampen road vibration better then poly. Poly is much harder then rubber. Poly bushings will outlast rubber but poly is "harder" then rubber. There are two sides to every street . Rubber is softer and provides a "better ride" but needs to be replaced sooner then poly. Poly will outlast rubber by a mile but however may provide a rougher ride.
As far as a "loose" feeling front end is concerned , many items can contribute. Worn ball joints, tied rod ends, tie rods, upper/lower A-arm bushings can contribute.
You need to find the cause of the problem that is affecting your comfort. In my opinion most average "daily drivers" donot notice "play" in the steering.
Ask me about spherical rod end bearings sometime ............ LOL
