lifter noises yet again

Okay I don't get it.
Friday afternoon I tore open the top end once more. Removed cams, removed all 16 lifters. Compared the lifters to the 16 from my old engine. Found one of the intake lifters on #3 cylinder was dodgy - flipped over, I could push down on it with my finger. Couldn't do this on any of the other lifters though - thus coming to the conclusion that somehow I had missed diagnosing this lifter when I pushed down on them with the lifters installed.
Reassembled with a good lifter (taken from the same position on the old engine). Fired it up - and the ticking remains. Okay, let it idle for close to 40 minutes, but the noise is still present. Drove it to school and back from my study group yesterday. Went in and bled the oiling system. Fired it up again, the noise STILL remains!
AAIIIII!!!!!
The noise is consistent with a dodgy lifter. I appeared to have found said lifter and replaced it with a seemingly good one. But the noise is still there! What to do?
