Much better to have it engage/disengage close to the top as that indicates the master cylinder is doing it's job right. Also, as to variation between years/model from one 900 to another - I do know that different pressure plates are used. That means a different spring diaphram assembly, which may account for the difference in pedal travel. What you could do to eliminate so much pedal travel is to mount some sort of stop on the back of the clutch pedal. I recently changed the front driver's side carpet mat which happens to be thicker than the former. This makes for less pedal travel.
I've driven many manual cars and trucks over the years, each with it's own clutch particulars. My favorite was a workhorse Ford 150 6 cylinder 3 speed. The transmission was amazingly sturdy, reliable and forgiving, and the clutch would begin to engage very close to the floor. That made for very smooth starts from a complete stop. My 82900T tranny isn't anywhere near as sturdy, reliable or forgiving as that truck!
