This area should definitely be lit. One of 2 problems probably exists. The first, and most likely, is either a bad or dirty connections at the rheostat that controls the intensity of the lights. This knob is located to the left of the steering wheel, near the foglight switch. make sure it is turned all the way to the right, and also that the contacts are clean (you can buy electrical contact cleaner at radio shack)... In order to remove the rheostat, pop the knob off, and then loosen and remove the nut that holds the rheostat to the facia panel..
The second problem that might exist is that the lightbulbs themselves are actually dead. I think there are two bulbs that light the temperature control knob, fan speed and air distribution selector..There may be a 3rd, but I can't remember, someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.. :o) There is also a bulb for the fasten seatbelt sign, too.. In order to gain access to these bulbs you need to remove the radio and it's cage.. If you have the factory radio, simply use the radio removal tool, pull the radio, and then remove the radio cage from the dashboard (bend the tabs out of the way), and pull that out too.. If you have an aftermarket radio, you need to pull the radio using the pulling tools that came with that radio and it's cage, and then also remove the cage by bending the tabs. Then you can reach down and check the bulbs.
Good luck!
