Just reading about the harmonic balancer

If the car squeals, how do you know if it's the harmonic balancer or the alternator. The thing is when the squealing happens, the voltage drops and it won't stop (squealing) until you decrease the electrical load. I thought it was the bearings on the alternator (belts are tight), but now I'm concerned about it being the balancer.
